| The 2005 VicRoads
Young Professional Engineer Award, presented by Engineers
Australia, Victoria Division, was announced at the Victorian
Engineering Excellence Awards Dinner Presentation which was
held on Thursday, 13 October.
Ms Rebecca Barker was named the VicRoads Young
Professional Engineer of the Year and awarded a generous cash
prize of $3000. Ms Barker is now eligible for the National
Award.
Judges were impressed by Rebecca’s articulate,
professional responses to interview questions and her profile
in promoting the views of young engineers and the engineering
profession. Rebecca has excelled in her role with leading
engineering consultancy Maunsell Australia Pty Ltd. Her commitment
to the profession has recently been recognised by her inclusion
in the Engineers Australia 2005 Top 100 Most Influential Engineers.
The Award acknowledges and rewards young engineering
professionals who have reached a high level of achievement
and involvement in engineering and community affairs and is
an important vehicle through which we can promote the profession
and topical engineering issues to the community through the
achievements of our young engineers.
One of Rebecca’s most inspiring experiences
involved working as a member of the Australia Tsunami Engineering
Relief Team, inspecting the structural condition and safety
of school buildings impacted by the Tsunami. Ms Barker also
holds many offices within Engineers Australia, including National
Chair of Young Engineers Australia.
A Highly Commended Award was awarded to Mr Jon
McNaught of Mildura in regional Victoria, who also displayed
a significant level of engineering proficiency and industry
achievement. He was awarded a $1500 cash prize.
Jon is a Mechanical Engineer and Manager of
the Mildura office of GHD Pty Ltd and has been involved with
numerous large scale projects including the construction of
a new maintenance depot for Melbourne Water at Healesville.

record and the diversity of engineering and technical expertise
as well as the business acumen and maturity displayed during
the interview process. Jon is an active participant in a broad
range of community activities and is an active member of the
Engineers Australia, Sunraysia Group.
