2006 YOUNG ENGINEERING AWARDS
WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The 2006 Young Professional Engineer Award and the 2006 Young Engineering
Associate Award, presented by Engineers Australia, Victoria Division,
acknowledge and reward young engineering professionals and young
engineering associates who have reached a significant level of achievement
and involvement in engineering and
community affairs. The Awards also promote the engineering profession
and topical engineering issues to the community through the achievements
of young engineers and young engineering associates.
These Awards were presented at the Engineers
Australia, Victoria Division 46th Chapman Oration and Dinner held
on Thursday, 24 August 2006 at Palladium at Crown. The winners were
awarded a cash prize of $3000. The High Commendations were presented
with a cash prize of $1500.

Engineer Award

Winner: Mr Jon McNaught
Jon
completed a double degree and graduated from Melbourne University
with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with honours and a Bachelor
of Commerce.
Jon is currently working as the Mildura
Office Manager of GHD, a role he has held since mid 2005. In his
time in Mildura Jon has managed to grow the office from one staff
member to nine and has been involved with many significant projects
in the Mildura region, namely the design of a new water pump for
Melbourne Water.
Jon is heavily involved with the local
community and with a number of professional committees. He is currently
the Chairperson of the Mildura Young Professionals Network and is
an active member of Engineers Australia, Victoria Division.
Highly
Commended: Bianca Thimm, Bridge Engineer, GHD
As a Bridge Engineer with GHD, Bianca
is an active participant within design teams, including coordinating
between disciplines and solving technical problems. She has worked
on projects such as the West Gate Bridge As-Builts and the Regional
Fast Rail Project.
Bianca graduated with a double degree
of a Batchelor of Civil Engineering with first class honours and
a Bachelor of Business Administration with Distinction at RMIT University.
She has also completed a Master of Philosophy
in Structural Engineering at the University of Cambridge in the
UK.
2006 Young Engineering
Associate Award
Winner:
Mr Husnen Rupani
Husnen has completed an Advanced Diploma
of Electronics Engineering and is currently completing a Bachelors
degree. Husnen combines his study with his work at RMIT University
ˆ TAFE as Technical Support Officer and has been involved in
a number of interesting projects including a warning system for
vision impaired people. Husnen is a member of a number of professional
bodies and is heavily involved in extra curricular activities to
enhance his professional development.
As an outstanding
Victoria division nominee, Husnen Rupani has also been awarded the
Snowy Hydro Young Associate of the Year Award at the recent
Australian Engineering Excellence Awards on November 22 at Parliament
House.
The Judges considered a range of criteria
that included an assessment of Husnen's competence and significant
achievement in community affairs, a demonstrated understanding of
the role and purpose of the engineering profession within society,
the proficiency and use of communication skills in engineering projects
and effective communication with the wider community.
Highly
Commended: Andrew Pearce, Mechanical Engineering Student, RMIT University
Andrew has completed a Diploma of Mechanical
& Manufacturing Engineering as well as an Advanced Diploma of
Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering.
He is currently completing a Bachelor
of Mechanical Engineering at RMIT University. And is combing his
study with his work in the manufacturing industry.
