| RedR Australia Acheiving Milestones |
Since July 2005, nearly 80 overseas humanitarian aid assignments have been undertaken by RedR Australia register members. This is in stark contrast to the usual 20-30 assignments per year. Of the 80 assignments covering areas such as Aceh, Pakistan, Sudan and the Maldives, half were undertaken by first-time deployees. Women represented nearly one quarter of the total number of deployees.
This demand for technical experts means that RedR Australia is keen to attract more members for its register. They are particularly seeking engineers with skills in roads, bridges, airports, port construction or water and sanitation supply; construction engineers; structural engineers; geotechnical engineers, and site surveyors. Prior to being considered for deployment RedR Australia provides training in using these skills in an aid setting together with all aspects of personal health and security issues.
If you see yourself as a really practical engineer and are interested in short term (three to six months) deployments overseas in disaster relief, the next training courses are scheduled for June 2006. Engineers interested in applying for the register are encouraged to enrol for the courses now, in order to be interviewed before attending the training.
Further details are available from the website: http://www.redr.org/australia or by telephoning (03) 9329 1357.
